Description

This is a 3 year advanced apprenticeship programme on which you will gain all the qualifications to become a fully qualified service technician. Main duties for the Service Technician role include:

Maintenance and servicing of vehicles:

  • Scheduled servicing, including timing belt renewal. Etc.
  • Replacement of brake pads, disks, etc.
  • Oil and fluid changes.
  • Alignment checks and adjustment of steering systems
  • Renewal and repair of tyres
  • Diagnosis of system faults, and reporting of such faults with complete descriptions and suggestions for repair
  • Repairs to major units:
  • Engine component e.g. cylinder head, repairs
  • Engine overhauls
  • Gearbox repair and renewal
  • Clutch renewal
  • Completion of job cards, giving clear and understandable reports of the work carried out
  • Working to manufacturers methods/standards and to their suggested repair times
  • Maintaining workshop standards, especially in regards to Health and Safety standards and regulations.
  • Working as part of the service department team, following instructions from workshop controller and service manager.

Each manufacturer holds a graduation celebration each year for the apprentices that have successfully completed their programme. The celebrations vary but each is an acknowledgement of the success that has been achieved by the apprentices.

Hours of work;

16-18 maximum of a 40 hour week

19+ up to 48 hours a week

(hours of work do vary, it will usually be Monday-Friday with the odd Saturday)

Apprentice Minimum Wage

Minimum wage for an apprentice of any age for their first year can be paid at £3.30 per hour.

In your second year and third year if you are aged 19-20 you will be paid the national minimum wage which is £5.13 per hour.

If aged over 21 in your second and third year minimum wage is £6.50 per hour.

Future Prospects


On completion of the three year Advanced Apprenticeship you will receive the following:
Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence (VCQ) (SVQ 7 in Scotland)
Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (VRQ) (Level 7 in Scotland)
Functional Skills Level 2 in English, Maths and ICT (Essential Skills for Wales and Core Skills for Scotland)
L3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC842-2006) *Programme Specific
Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities for the Automotive Industry

As well as the above qualifications there is an 80% chance that you will receive a full time job as a fully qualified Service Technician within the dealership once your apprenticeship is completed.

Skills Required :


The employer is looking for someone with a genuine interest in the automotive sector. Ideally you will have some work experience within a garage, however a can do attitude and a passion for the industry is essential. This is a demanding course with examinations and practical assessments throughout. You will require considerable commitment in both classroom and motor vehicle workshops.

Qualification(s) Required :


A minimum of 5 GCSEs A*-C (or equivalent) this must include English and Mathematics.

Training Provided
You will receive your practical training within the dealership. Every 5/6 weeks you will attend block release training at our training facility in Milton Keynes.
You will have your own dedicated vocational learning advisor who will visit you within the dealership throughout your training to assess you in the workplace and support you on your journey.
