Description

The holder of this position will embark on a training programme within the Analytical Sciences division based at the Reading Science Centre (RSC). The training will involve both generic and specific lab based tasks, relevant to the laboratory being worked in. A set period of time will be spent training in each of the following areas: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Development, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Microscopy, Investigative Analysis, Physical Properties, Functional Ingredients, Metals, DNA & Protein and Product & Ingredient Innovation.

Trainee Scientists carry out fundamental tests as part of a scientific team; the work plays an important role in the foundation stages of research and development for Mondelez and in routine scientific analysis and investigations for the companies external business model, i.e. RSSL.

In addition to training for laboratory-based tasks, the post holder will also provide all the required support (general housekeeping, administration etc.) to enable the laboratory to function effectively, whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

The training will be staged over approximately a two year period and will include further /higher education studies (day release) in a relevant qualification. This, combined with the work based learning at the RSC, will enable the post holder to obtain the nationally recognised award of Registered Science Technician (RSciTech).

Upon completion of the training programme, the post holder will join the ‘flexible resource team’, applying the skills and knowledge gained from the programme, in order to support those area’s needing extra resource.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Carry out routine tasks accurately, following strict operating procedures for tasks such as
sampling, measuring, weighing and data logging.
2. General housekeeping duties (e.g. stock taking and resourcing, administrative tasks,
cleaning etc.) ensuring the laboratory environment operates effectively and efficiently.
3. Follow strict health and safety procedures in line with individual laboratory requirements.
4. Communicate effectively and demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of
a team.
5. Preparing specimens and samples according to in-house methods and external literature
(specific client methods, pharmacopeias etc).
6. Perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support both
Mondelez and RSSL projects.

7. Documentation and assessment of data to monitor and deliver results; considers implications
and draws conclusions. Writes technical reports / certificates of analysis with guidance from
manager.
