What to Wear to an Apprenticeships Interview

Abby Davies - Thursday, November 03, 2016

We know that for many of you, your apprenticeship interview is likely to be the first interview you’ve ever been to and so we often have a lot of questions about what you can expect to happen on the day. One of the most common questions we get asked is what exactly you should wear to the interview, so for today’s post we thought we’d give you our best advice and top tips.

Research shows that from the moment a stranger first meets you, it only takes them seven seconds to decide what their first impressions of you are. This means that you need to make sure that you’re dressed appropriately and live up to their expectations, as otherwise you won’t stand a chance for the remainder of the interview. Here are our top tips to help make sure that you look the part on the day.

  • 1.Be prepared

Don’t leave it until the last minute to go shopping, as you don’t want to be running around the shops the day before struggling to find something to wear. Also, make sure you get everything ready the night before your interview so you don’t need to rush around in the morning trying to find everything and make sure it is ironed and ready to go! Plan your outfit and lay it out ready to go so you won’t wake up in a panic.

  • 2.Dress smartly

You’re wanting to impress your interviewer and leave a lasting impression, so you need to look your best. Our advice would be to dress smartly – it is much better to be overdressed than underdressed! Make sure that your clothes are ironed and shoes are clean. However, if you really think that wearing a suit is too much for the company you’re interviewing with, still make sure that whatever you wear looks professional and fits in with the place you’re going to.

  • 3.Don’t forget your body language!

Looking smart is about more than just what you’re wearing, so don’t forget your facial expressions and body language. Make sure you smile, look like you’re enjoying yourself and don’t slouch when the interviewer is talking to you.
