Parents and apprenticeships…

While apprenticeships are becoming the new favourite for companies and for university alternatives, there is still a largely important audience that needs some convincing. Many parents across the country that we meet struggle with apprenticeship stereotypes, that are quite frankly out-dated in comparison to what a modern day apprenticeship can now offer for their children.

Published by the Telegraph back in August 51% of adults said they would still prefer their children to go into further education, than consider an apprenticeship. While hard efforts are being put in place to support the government’s 2020 Vision to complete 3 million apprenticeships by 2020, the apprenticeship ‘brand’ is still tackling old perceptions of their poor quality in comparison to a university education.What we focus on at AIM Apprenticeships is the driving force behind candidates wanting to apply for apprenticeships, and a large contribution to that are the parents.

…Then the support and opportunities that are provided by us in schools is encouraged behind the scenes at home as well.

As a result, in connection with the start of our school visits this month, we are launching some brand new parent Q&A sessions to overcome these hurdles. The biggest issues we come across are elements that determine the quality of training that their child receives and how it affects the start of their career. For example, the apprenticeship wage, progression paths and employment stability. When looking at the bigger picture, in the long run, an apprenticeship is a lot more constant for young people than the uncertainty of having to repay university loans, and securing a graduate job.

One change that is helping is the addition of further education (FE) colleges offering their own apprenticeships straight out of GCSEs and A-Levels. These Advanced and Higher-level apprenticeships offer a great stepping block onto a professional career platform with a strong path to success. It is becoming more and more often for organisations that are known for their extensive graduate schemes are now investing more into their apprenticeship programs to grow and develop an up-and-coming generation of employees with a longevity that is more beneficial for business. By doing this, training and recruitment costs remain low, while the development of younger employees ensures a working technique that is uniformed, fresh and specific to company ethos. It is reasons such as these that companies are preferring apprentices over university graduates, therefore spending more time, money and resources creating a great career path for them. While the integration of degree apprenticeships is still relatively new, we need more examples of organisations following this trend to prove that earning a smaller wage with hands on training is a better option than studying for three years straight, while accumulating years and years of debt.

We try and explain that earning specifically tailored industry qualifications is much more attractive than obtaining general certificates that will still require further training. Styles of education aren’t favoured to be so widespread anymore. In this day and ages of employment the further in depth someone’s education and knowledge is, the better chance they have of securing a position, something that apprenticeships can provide with experience as well as an education.

While it is so important that every young person should have a say in what path they choose to start their career, the support of parents is just as important, especially as the concentration of the age group is 16-19 year olds. It is encouraged to consider all options to make the right decision, and this is while all parties need to be informed. Students, teachers and the parents!
